Does it cost me anything to create a online resume, or to display it on Is My CV?
No, creating and displaying online resumes on Is My CV is free. Employers pay a small fee to access resumes for a particular industry or profession.
 
How many online resumes can I create?
There is currently no limit on the number of resumes you can create.
 
Is there any difference between a resume and a CV?
A resume and a CV (or ‘Curriculum Vitae’) are two ways of saying the same thing. Both are documents that outline an individual’s work history and personal skills, and are the standard document used in the selection of new employees.
 
How often should I update my resume?
It’s a good idea to check your existing resumes regularly. While you may not have new work experience to list, any development of your skills, any new equipment or software abilities, and any new responsibilities or achievements should be included to give you the best shot at getting that new job.
 
How detailed should my information be?
While it’s true that the more information you provide, the more likely an employer is to find what they’re looking for, you don’t want to include so much information that it’s impossible to read everything. Bear in mind that employers will potentially be looking through dozens of resumes, and make sure the information they really need is easy to find.
 
Think about the most important skills, responsibilities, achievements and interests associated with your industry and/or profession, and list them- in point form- in order.
 
What salary should I say I’m looking for?
It can be difficult deciding what salary to set for yourself. On the one hand, you want to earn as high a salary as possible, on the other, you don’t want to put yourself out of the running for a job.
 
The best approach is to think of the salary you enter as a minimum. What is the smallest salary, appropriate for your skills, that you would be willing to accept? Do not enter a salary that you would turn down if offered.
 
What if the occupation or industry I’m interested in does not appear on the list?
Employers use the same list of industries and occupations that is available for job seekers. If the specific job or industry you’re looking for does not appear, choose an industry and whichever occupations come closest to what you’re looking for.
 
By submitting a resume with these tags, an employer will still be able to find you, and you may even find yourself being considered for an exciting new position.
 
How are Career Objectives and Key Strengths/Attributes different from my work experience?
It’s important when putting together a resume that employers get a sense not only of what you can do, but of who you are. By providing some information on your career objectives, such as what you hope to achieve, where you’d like to be in five years and any other information on what you’re aiming for, and on your personal strengths and abilities, you’re giving employers a sense of the type of person they’ll be taking on.
 
When writing your objectives, don’t be afraid to be honest. Having aspirations shows that you’re keen to work hard and get ahead.
 
In my Employment History, what’s the difference between a Key Responsibility and a Key Achievement?
When listing key responsibilities, try to think of all the tasks and duties that formed a part of your role. Some responsibilities are daily, while others may be weekly, monthly or annually. Keep each point as clear and short as possible, and try to limit yourself to 8 – 10 responsibilities for each job.
 
An achievement is a noteworthy accomplishment that was achieved while fulfilling your responsibilities. Did you contribute to an increase in production or turnover? Was your team or company a part of a major deal, operation or event that you were a part of? Did you implement any new procedures or systems? The parameters of an ‘achievement’ will change for each occupation, so think about something you were particularly proud of in the course of your employment.
 
What can I list as Skills for my targeted job?
Skills are all the special abilities, often unique to your job, that you either need to do the job successfully, or that are considered to be an advantage.
 
Skills could include any computer programs you’re proficient with, any equipment or tools you have experience using, customer service or sales skills, or any other proficiencies.
 
Why should I list my hobbies?
When an employer hires someone new, they’re not just taking on a set of skills, they’re adding a new person to their team, and many employers are very conscious of the type of person they add to an existing group. Knowing what you do in your free time helps an employer get a sense of the type of person you are.
 
This might include sports, arts, hobbies, clubs you belong to, travel- anything you think reflects the kind of person you are. If you can, be specific; if you like reading, what do you like to read?
 
Do I have to include references?
Contacting references is a vital part of most recruitment processes. Keep in mind, a potential employer who reads your resume has never met you. They need to make sure the information you’ve included in your resume accurately reflects who you are and what you’ve done.
 
By not including references, it might look as though you are trying to hide something.
 
Who should my references be?
References fall into two categories: Professional and personal.

A professional reference is usually a former or current employer. Try to avoid including workmates on the same level as yourself, or your direct reports. Most employers want to speak to employers you’ve had in the past (or currently).

A personal reference is someone close enough to you to be able to talk about the kind of person you are, without being so close that they are biased. Good examples include religious leaders, committee members at any sporting clubs or leaders at community or charity organizations. Members of your family are generally not appropriate.
 
Can I make myself anonymous?
It is possible, in the Details Page, you can set your preferences to hide the company you're currently working for, hide/show your surname and exclude certain contact details.
 
After I make or post my online resume on Is My CV, how long should I wait before employers start calling me?
Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict how frequently you might be contacted for new job opportunities. When an employer has a job opening and uses Is My CV to search for applicants, they must enter their search criteria. If your resume fits the criteria, the employer decides whether or not to contact you.

By adding a photo and video to your resume, you increase your position in the search listing and greatly increase your chances of being noticed.
