An Electrician is a specialist tradesman who plans, installs and repairs electrical wiring of buildings, machines and other equipment. Electricians may also apply their skills and knowledge to wiring ships, airplanes and other major transport vessels.
Electricians require a license to work in Australia, entitling them to carry out all variety of electrical installation work without supervision. Electricians may be required to install or repair:
- air conditioning
- data and cabling systems
- local area, wide area and virtual private networks
- light fittings
- phone and power points
- safety switches and safety inspections
- smoke alarm installation and inspection
The usual mode of entry into this industry is through a four year apprenticeship, during which the apprentice attends a trade school in addition to on-the-job training.
