A Fashion Designer is the creative professional who leads a team to produce seasonal clothing and accessories collections either independently or as part of a commercial company.
A Fashion Designer researches fashion trends, creates sketches and mood-boards, chooses materials and prints, attends fashion shows, and supervises marketing activities around the collection. Often, a Fashion Designer will work with professional patternmakers and sewers to see their initial sketches develop into the final products.
A Fashion Designer has many options; they may work independently and take on many of the tasks of design and production alone or with a small team. Alternatively, they may join a commercial company and produce designs under the company title. Fashion Designers may work in women’s wear, men’s wear, children’s wear, socks and hosiery or lingerie.
This is a highly competitive field and increasingly, Fashion Designers require broad and highly technical skills to be adept at computer-aided design, selling to international buyers, and producing desirable collections that display a creative and original voice.
